BIOGRAPHY

1949 Born in Tokyo.

1972 Shibata begins his career as a painter, majoring in painting at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.

1975-76 Studies painting and printmaking at the Royal Academy in Ghent, Belgium.

1983 Begins his series, The Quintessence of Japan, photographing landscapes from around the country.

1987 Becomes a Professor at the Tokyo College of Photography.

1995 Commissioned by Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art to photograph the United States.
