Peter Beard
Peter Beard
Photographer, writer, diarist, anthropologist, historian and socialite. A man of extremes, excesses, and possible contradictions, Beard has led the kind of wild, rugged life fictionalised by writers such as Hemingway. During the last thirty years at his home in Kenya, he has had one clear obsession: chronicling the devastation of nature in East Africa.
Peter’s background is firmly entrenched in Montauk and New York City, and his destiny firmly rooted in Africa. His work has grown from his unique relationship with the land and its teeming wildlife, and the people that inhabit Kenya’s majestic landscapes. Peter Beard is the ultimate wildlife photographer, but not in any way associated with the rather hackneyed vision that the tourists bring back from their two-week safari. The images are instinctual interpretations of his feelings for the GIANT that Africa is. Anyone who has visited Africa cannot fail to be moved by its wildness and grandeur. It seeps into the pores and the mind, the smell and sounds of the great plains, once populated by innumerable herds of animals, become etched into the memory forever.
Throughout it all, Beard has remained what people call “a charismatic and controversial” individual. His life has been filled with such glamorous figures as Francis Bacon, Andy Warhol, and the model Iman. His story is ultimately East Africa’s story - a look into a world irrevocably changed. Through his classic photographs, Beard has given shape and texture to both his intriguing character and the country that is his passion.
