Croner was introduced to the Brodovitch classes by his friend and mentor Fernand Fonssagrives in 1947. Alexey Brodovitch gave Croner his first big assignment soon after he joined the ‘class’ : “I’d like you to go out and photograph the city at night.” It was this calculated idea, this confluence of a photographer and a subject, that would result in some of Croner’s most compelling work of the city he came from, and established him as one of New York’s finest visual documentors.
