Summary

BORIS SAVELEV

31 Years – Boris Savelev’s first show in the UK was met with enormous enthusiasm and success in April, both in terms of sales and in the press. The show was given five stars by the Evening Standard, where it was praised as ‘the most exciting collection of the year’. Adam Lowe from Factum Arte and Boris and his wife attended the private view, during which most pieces, including ‘Little Red Girl 1987, ’Metro Girl, Moscow,1985’ and ‘Lenin Czernowitz 1979’ sold out.

Welook forward to seeing the final edit of Luke Tchalenko’s film of Boris at work, for which the final hang and private view will be the dénouement.

HONG KONG ART FAIR

The Fair, which took place in mid May this year, built decisively on the success of its first inception in 2008. It was felt in the press and amongst the attendees that the fair had matured quickly, adding layers of structure and a confidence seen in the most established art events.

It was an upbeat and positive experience, marked by excellent organisation and service by the coordinators of the show. We sold work by Tim Walker, who proved a hit with the Asian collectors, and Araki, an established favourite of both Asian and European connoisseurs alike. It was our first appearance at a fair in Asia, and we look forward to attending next year.

TIM WALKER

We are delighted that Tim Walker has appointed the Michael Hoppen Gallery as the exclusive representative for his fine art prints world wide

The London based photographer has established himself as one of the most sought-after British photographers of his generation.

In the spring of 2008 his first major show was held at the Design Museum in London, which coincided with the publication of his first book ‘Pictures’, after which he was part of ‘Weird Beauty’ at the ICP in New York.  Tim is the recipient of the 2009 ICP Infinity Award. The Infinity awards were inaugurated in 1985 to bring public attention to outstanding achievements in photography.

OFER WOLBERGER

(LIFE WITH) MAGGIE

4th June- July 25th

Michael Hoppen Contemporary

Our current show is Ofer Wolberger’s new series (Life with) Maggie.

Maggie - always portrayed by Wolberger’s muse Billie Martineau - is a fictional character who seems transported from another time and place, a world seemingly set in the past, yet imbued with distinctly modern concerns. Maggie has a peculiar and compelling style. She travels around the contemporary world, but is attracted to sites with a slippery sense of time. Throughout her journey, Maggie collects memorable snapshots for her archive, in a sense constructing an identity through the photographs. At a time when so many people are obsessed with constructing online identities through social networks like MySpace and Facebook, Maggie is out in the physical world attempting to understand how and where she fits in.  Ofer and Billie were with us for the private view this June.

Mixed Show

Michael Hoppen Contemporary

As an antidote to the misery of hot, sticky mid season sales shopping  on the King’s Road, Michae lHoppen Contemporary will treat visitors to an exhibition intended to visually refresh and revive them. A mixed show containing images of cool water, ice, snowy climes and freezing weather has been chosen, to counteract what may well be the hottest summer for many years. Dive in.

STARTING WITH A PHOTOGRAPH

An exhibition of unique pieces in collaboration with The Saatchi Gallery Online.

10thSeptember – 12th October

Michael Hoppen Contemporary

The Saatchi Gallery online is a resource by which any artist, using any medium can showcase their work to thousands of visitors every day. Recently moved to Duke of York Square, the Saatchi Gallery are collaborating with Michael Hoppen Contemporary for the first time to curate a show of handpicked Saatchi online artists. The only criterion is that the work must begin with a photograph.Beyond that, each unique and one-off piece is the vision of the artist concerned.

Among those exhibiting will be Maurizio Anzeri who uses intricate sewing techniques, who has made a series of new works with a geometric layering of embroidery over found photographs. Gabriele Beveridge will be showing a selection of distorted Polaroid works, Hannah Dakin creates beautiful daydream-like images by printing on different textures and layering the results, DY Kim photographs objects several times from different angles, accentuating the three dimensional and painterly potential of photography, and David Birkin will be exhibiting new work which expands on his much admired Confession series. His work will include a performance piece to be staged after the show’s opening.

Starting With a Photograph represents a synergy between the two art organisations, both of which are interested in the continual and evolving discourse around contemporary art and photography, and seek to promote innovative talent from around the globe.

ELLEN VON UNWERTH

‘FRAÜLIEN’

October-November

Michael Hoppen Gallery

Ellen von Unwerth worked as a fashion model for ten years before moving behind the camera. Quoted as saying "(Women) are not justthere to be admired, they are there to be enjoyed," her erotically chargedimages of models, film and music stars are as well know as the subjects of the photographs themselves. The Michael Hoppen Gallery is delighted to announce ‘Fräulein’; a show o fpersonal favourites and never previously seen images from the last 15 years.

The exhibition at Michael Hoppen will take place in collaboration with Taschen, who will be publishing a major monograph of Ellen von Unwerth’s work. The text is written by Ingrid Sischy, the former editor in chief of Interview magazine andcurrently fashion critic at the New Yorker and a contributing editor for Vanity Fair.

The exhibition and monograph celebrate female icons in provocative poses: Claudia Schiffer, PenelopeCruz, Natalie Portman, Kate Moss, Vanessa Paradis, Britney Spears, Eva Mendes,Lindsay Lohan, Dita von Teese, Adriana Lima, Carla Bruni, Eva Green among many others.

‘IT’S A CRIME TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS THIS GOOD…’

Photographs as Evidence; early images by WEEGEE THE FAMOUS.

November-January 2010

Michael Hoppen Gallery

Always in the right place at the right time, Weegee’s lense was perpetually aimed the visceral and sometimes violent city of New York. In 1993, Wilma Fellig,Weegee’s widow, bequeathed her entire collection to the ICP, and we are delighted offer a selected pieces of this unique photographers work which includes images never previously seen in the UK.

Weegee photographed New York in the 1930s and 1940s in the same iconic and instantly recognisable way Woody Allen was to film the city in the 1970s. Weegee’s voyeuristic eye sought out the harsh realities of the urban experience, but also the joie de vivre and carefree attitude which typified the years between the wars.

As an adjunct to Weegee’s work, we will also be showing further images by Sergei Vasiliev, and Stan Healy.
