Whats worth more, a picture or a thousand words? In the works of Mexican artist Eugenia Martinez. you get both. She combs flea markets in Mexico City for old family photographs, often dating back to the colonial era. Then she embelllishes the unidentified figures with painted dots and lines, or crowds them out with words (taken from a Mexican politician or pop star) to create what she calls "a halo of prejudice". The results - on view at Michael Hoppen Gallery in London this month - are as beautiful as they are impenetrable.
