Book

Unique artist’s book of cyanotype prints, signed and numbered by the artist. Published in a limited edition of 30 numbered copies with 5 artist proofs. Handbound hardcover with cyanotyped linen cover on Buckram Couvrotec.

This unique artist book was created by French artist Thomas Mailaender as a personal homage to the first photobook. It is inspired by the album British botanist Anna Atkins constructed 175 years ago, to present her cyanotypes of plants and seaweed collected over the course of 10 years selecting specimens along the southwest coast of England. Mailaender reimagined this process by producing cyanotype prints based on images drawn from his project The Fun Archive, a collection of images gathered from across the internet over the last decade.

Created with ten collaborators over two weeks, these handbound albums each feature a unique cyanotyped linen cover and comprise x pages of double-sided cyanotype prints. Printed across large papers treated with a photosensitive solution, Mailaender created the 76 x 56 cm prints on Velin d’Arche deckle edge paper. These prints were trimmed, assembled at random, and then bound into books at his studio in Limoge.
