Guy Bourdin: Walking Legs, Michael Hoppen Gallery, LondonAesthetica March 2, 2015
Walking Legs, is one of Parisian photographer Guy Bourdin’s most loved campaign series, commissioned initially by French shoe designer – and longstanding friend, collaborator, client – Charles Jourdan. Shot against quintessentially English home, town and country landscapes, this high-end 1979 campaign is surely an unusual one – comprising a range of disembodied mannequin legs which appear to be strutting along proudly in their glimmering designer heels.

Guy Bourdin - Walking LegsNicole Swengley , How to Spend It February 5, 2015
In 1979, French photographer Guy Bourdin took a Cadillac road trip from London to Brighton to shoot a fashion campaign commissioned by shoe supremo Charles Jourdan. Dispensing with live models, he employed a pair of mannequin legs, beautifully shod in Charles Jourdan creations, to tell a story that’s as much about quintessentially British landmarks (Battersea Power Station, Brighton seafront – first picture, a taxi rank, a bus shelter – second picture, a rose garden – third picture) as it is about fashionable footwear.

The protégé of Man Ray always gave fashion photography and advertising campaigns a provocative and surreal twist. Here, you can get a taste of Bourdin's penchant for the bizzare in a 1979 Charles Jourdan campaign shot during a road trip from London to Brighton. Instead of models, Bourdin used mannequin legs wearing Jourdan shoes in deserted locations.

Guy Bourdin images prove that this fashion decade had many different facets.
I have been twice to the London exhibition Guy Bourdin: Image Maker (at Somerset House until March 15).
